Industrial boilers and heat exchangers rank among the most challenging oversize loads in the heavy haul industry. A large firetube boiler can be 14 feet in diameter and 60 feet long, well into superload territory. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger for a petroleum refinery may weigh 200,000 pounds before it leaves the fabrication shop. Getting these vessels from the point of manufacture to a power plant, refinery, or industrial facility requires more than a truck and a trailer — it requires route engineering, permit coordination across multiple states, and transport equipment matched to the load's dimensions and weight.

Types of Industrial Boilers We Transport
Firetube Boilers
Firetube boilers — also called smoke tube boilers — are among the most common industrial boiler types. Hot combustion gases pass through tubes that run through a water-filled shell, transferring heat to produce steam. These boilers range from small packaged units weighing 10,000 pounds to large industrial models weighing 150,000 pounds or more with diameters reaching 10 to 14 feet.
- Packaged Firetube Boilers: Factory-assembled units ready to connect. Typical size: 4–8 feet diameter, 15–30 feet long, 10,000–60,000 lbs
- Large Industrial Firetube: Custom-fabricated for heavy industry. Can exceed 12 feet diameter, 50 feet length, and 120,000 lbs
- Scotch Marine Boilers: Common in marine applications and shore-based industrial plants. Typically 6–10 feet diameter, 15–25 feet long
- Horizontal Return Tubular (HRT) Boilers: Older style still in service at legacy industrial plants
Watertube Boilers
Watertube boilers circulate water through tubes exposed to combustion gases and are capable of producing much higher steam pressures than firetube designs. Utility-grade watertube boilers used in power generation are among the largest stationary equipment items manufactured, but the boiler drums, headers, and subassemblies used in field-erected units are transported individually and assembled on-site.
- Steam Drums: The upper vessel in a watertube boiler. Can be 6–9 feet in diameter and 30–60 feet long, weighing 50,000–300,000 lbs
- Mud Drums: Lower collection vessels, similar diameter to steam drums
- Boiler Banks / Convection Sections: Tube bundle assemblies that often require careful crating and overwidth transport
- Industrial Package Watertube Boilers: Field-assembled but shop-fabricated components, often transported on RGN or lowboy trailers
Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG)
Heat recovery steam generators capture exhaust heat from gas turbines and use it to produce steam. HRSG modules used in combined-cycle power plants are among the most logistically complex industrial equipment moves — individual modules can weigh 200,000 to 500,000 pounds and require multi-axle self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) or specialized hydraulic trailers.
Waste Heat Boilers
Waste heat boilers recover heat from process gases in refineries, steel mills, cement plants, and similar facilities. These are typically horizontal cylindrical vessels with dimensions and weights similar to large industrial firetube boilers. Many are transported directly from the fabrication shop to the receiving plant on multi-axle lowboy or RGN trailers.
Heat Exchanger Transport
Heat exchangers transfer heat between two process streams without allowing them to mix. They are ubiquitous in petrochemical plants, refineries, chemical processing facilities, and power plants. Sizes vary enormously — from small skid-mounted units to massive shell-and-tube heat exchangers that are 6 feet in diameter, 80 feet long, and weigh over 300,000 pounds.
Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers
The most common type in refinery and petrochemical service. A cylindrical shell houses hundreds of tubes through which one fluid passes while another flows around them. Large refinery heat exchangers frequently exceed legal size and weight limits and require oversize or superload permits.
- Small units: 2–4 feet diameter, 10–20 feet long, 5,000–40,000 lbs — typically move on standard flatbed or step deck
- Medium units: 4–6 feet diameter, 20–50 feet long, 40,000–120,000 lbs — RGN or multi-axle lowboy with overweight permits
- Large units: 6–10 feet diameter, 50–80 feet long, 120,000–400,000 lbs — multi-axle specialized trailers, superload permits, engineering survey
Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers (Air Fin Coolers)
Air fin coolers use ambient air rather than water to cool process streams. The header boxes and tube bundles are often transported separately due to width — individual bundle sections can be 8 to 20 feet wide — and reassembled on the structure at the facility. Oversized header boxes and large-bay bundle sections require overwidth permits and sometimes pilot car escorts.
Plate Heat Exchangers
Large plate heat exchanger frames for industrial applications can weigh 20,000 to 60,000 pounds and are typically transported assembled on flatbed or step deck trailers. Their size rarely triggers oversize permits unless the frame is unusually large.
Trailer Configurations for Boiler and Heat Exchanger Transport
RGN (Removable Gooseneck) Trailers
RGN trailers are the standard choice for boilers and heat exchangers that exceed step deck dimensions but are within standard overwidth and overheight ranges. The detachable gooseneck allows horizontal loading with a crane or forklift, preserving the vessel orientation during transport. A standard RGN handles up to 45,000 lbs; extendable RGN configurations handle longer vessels.
Multi-Axle Lowboy Trailers
Vessels weighing 80,000 to 250,000 pounds are typically moved on multi-axle lowboy trailers with 4 to 8 axle lines. The additional axles distribute weight to keep per-axle loads within permitted limits. Most states allow overweight permits up to 250,000 pounds gross vehicle weight on multi-axle configurations, though specific limits vary by state and route.
Hydraulic Platform Trailers
For the largest and heaviest vessels — heat exchangers and boiler drums weighing 250,000 to 600,000 pounds or more — hydraulic platform trailers or self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) are used. These trailers can be configured in any axle count and width needed to distribute weight across dozens of axles. Moves of this scale typically require engineering studies, utility coordination, and law enforcement escorts.
Permit Requirements for Industrial Boilers
The permit requirements for industrial boiler and heat exchanger transport depend on the vessel's actual dimensions and weight. As a general guide:
- Width 8'6" to 12': Standard oversize permits from each state on the route. Most states process in 24–48 hours.
- Width 12' to 14': Oversize permits with front pilot car required in most states.
- Width 14' to 16': Front and rear pilot cars required in most states; some require law enforcement escort at certain thresholds.
- Width over 16': Superload-level permits in most states, requiring engineering review. Law enforcement escort often required.
- Weight over 80,000 lbs GVW: Overweight permits required. Additional axles added as weight increases.
- Weight over 150,000 lbs: Superload threshold in many states. Engineering studies, bridge analysis, and advance route surveys often required.

Loading and Unloading Considerations
Large boilers and heat exchangers require careful planning at both the origin and destination. At the fabrication shop, the loading area must be accessible to the transport trailer — a multi-axle lowboy or hydraulic platform trailer needs a level, reinforced pad and sufficient turning radius. The vessel must be lifted and set in the correct orientation with adequate lifting points, typically saddles or lifting lugs designed for transport loads.
At the receiving plant, the unloading area must be designed in advance. For heavy vessels, foundation pads, crane access, and staging areas are coordinated before the transport truck arrives. We communicate with your site team during the planning phase to ensure that equipment, personnel, and site access are in place before the load departs.
For all oversize load transport, we confirm site accessibility during the quoting process. A vessel that arrives on time but cannot be unloaded because the access road cannot support the transport trailer weight is a problem we identify and solve before dispatch.
