Industrial Mixer & Agitator Transport Services
Industrial mixing equipment spans a wide range of sizes and configurations — from compact laboratory-scale units to enormous production vessels with top-mounted agitator drives, and from portable ribbon blenders that fit on a flatbed trailer to large horizontal paddle mixers or continuous kneaders that require oversize permits and multi-axle lowboys. What all of them share is a combination of dimensional and weight characteristics that require careful evaluation before each move: large-diameter mixing vessels that exceed standard width limits, tall vessel-and-agitator assemblies that approach or exceed height clearance thresholds, and heavy skid-mounted systems whose gross weight requires overweight permits for most highway axle groups.
R&RM LLC has transported industrial mixing and blending equipment for chemical manufacturers, food processors, pharmaceutical companies, fertilizer and agricultural chemical producers, and industrial minerals operations since 2011. We handle the full range — from single-unit moves for an auction pickup or dealer relocation to multi-load project deliveries for a new plant installation. Our team manages oversize and overweight permit acquisition in every state we transit, coordinates escort vehicles where required, and works with your site logistics team to deliver within the access constraints of your facility.
Types of Industrial Mixers & Blenders We Transport
Ribbon Blenders
Ribbon blenders — also called ribbon mixers or horizontal ribbon blenders — are workhorses of the dry bulk mixing and blending industry. A ribbon blender consists of a horizontal trough vessel with an outer helical ribbon and an inner counter-helical ribbon rotating on a central shaft. Sizes range from bench-scale units under 10 cubic feet to large production units with capacities of 1,000 to 5,000 cubic feet or more. A large production ribbon blender trough vessel may be 10 to 16 feet in diameter, 20 to 40 feet in length, and weigh 30,000 to 100,000 pounds empty depending on wall thickness and material of construction.
Ribbon blenders are widely used in fertilizer blending, pharmaceutical powder processing, animal feed production, food ingredient mixing, plastic compound blending, and specialty chemical manufacturing. When a large ribbon blender ships from the fabrication shop to the end user, the trough vessel typically ships separately from the drive unit, end covers, and ancillary equipment, with the shaft and ribbons either installed in the trough or shipped as a separate assembly. The trough's diameter and length combination often pushes the transport unit into overwidth or overheight territory, requiring an oversize load permit and in some cases a pilot car escort.
High-Shear Mixers
High-shear mixers — including rotor-stator homogenizers, in-line high-shear units, and batch high-shear mixing vessels — process everything from emulsions and dispersions to pastes and viscous polymer blends. Batch high-shear mixing tanks in the production range may be 6 to 12 feet in diameter and 10 to 18 feet in overall height when the top-mounted drive and shaft assembly is included. A large production unit in stainless steel — common in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and specialty chemical applications — may weigh 20,000 to 60,000 pounds, putting it in the overweight permit range for most trailer configurations.
The challenge with high-shear mixing vessels in transport is the vertical height dimension. The top-mounted mixing drive motor and gearbox extends well above the vessel shell, and when the assembled unit is loaded on a flatbed or lowboy trailer, the combined height of trailer deck plus vessel plus drive assembly may approach or exceed the standard 13-foot-6-inch highway clearance limit. R&RM LLC evaluates overall transport height at the time of booking and either selects a lower-deck trailer configuration or obtains an overheight permit with route-specific clearance confirmation before the load moves.
Paddle Mixers and Pug Mills
Paddle mixers and pug mills are used in cement manufacturing, ceramic and refractory processing, soil conditioning, and composting operations to mix stiff, dense, or abrasive materials that ribbon mixers and agitators cannot handle effectively. A single-shaft paddle mixer for a cement additive blend facility may be 4 to 8 feet in diameter and 15 to 30 feet in length, weighing 15,000 to 50,000 pounds for the mixer body alone, not including the drive assembly, inlet and discharge chutes, or mounting frame. A twin-shaft paddle mixer for a construction materials plant may weigh 60,000 to 120,000 pounds fully assembled and configured with a central drive gear package, making it a multi-axle lowboy load with overweight permits in most states.
Pug mills used in ceramic production and clay processing are similar in configuration but designed for the abrasive wear conditions of ceramic paste and clay processing. These units are typically smaller in overall size than cement-industry paddle mixers but are often shipped as complete assembled units with the drive package mounted, which adds height and increases the complexity of the oversize determination. R&RM LLC reviews the full assembled or disassembled dimensions with your plant engineering team before finalizing the trailer selection and permit applications.
Large Process Vessel Agitators and Top-Entry Agitator Systems
Industrial mixing in liquid-phase chemical processes, fermentation, and large-scale food and beverage production is often accomplished by top-entry agitator systems mounted on large open-top or closed-top process vessels. The agitator itself — consisting of a drive motor, gearbox, seal assembly, shaft, and impeller — may weigh 5,000 to 30,000 pounds for a large production unit. When the agitator ships pre-mounted on a tall vessel, the overall assembly height can easily exceed 16 to 20 feet, requiring both an overheight permit and careful bridge and utility line clearance review along the entire route.
Large fermentation vessels with agitators — common in ethanol production, industrial enzyme manufacturing, pharmaceutical API fermentation, and food ingredient production — may have vessel shells 10 to 20 feet in diameter and 20 to 40 feet in height, weighing 50,000 to 300,000 pounds or more when constructed in heavy-gauge stainless steel or carbon steel for high-pressure fermentation duty. These vessels typically ship as empty shells with agitator drives removed for the road move. R&RM LLC coordinates the disassembly and reassembly planning with your equipment supplier or site erection contractor and handles the multi-piece transport with the appropriate trailer configuration for each component.
Static Mixers and In-Line Mixing Systems
Static mixers — passive mixing devices that use fixed internal elements inside a pipe or vessel to mix flowing fluids without moving parts — are used throughout the chemical, refinery, water treatment, and food processing industries. Individual static mixer units range from small inline pipe mixers a few inches in diameter to large-diameter mixing vessels 4 to 10 feet in diameter and 20 to 60 feet in length for industrial scale applications. A large static mixer vessel for a water treatment facility or chemical plant may weigh 10,000 to 80,000 pounds and require oversize permits for width, height, or length.
In-line static mixer assemblies that are delivered pre-mounted on structural frames or skids — as is common in modular plant packages — may have overall dimensions that push the skid assembly into oversize territory even when each individual component would be legal on its own. R&RM LLC evaluates skid-mounted in-line mixing assemblies as assembled units and determines the permit and trailer requirements based on the overall skid dimensions and weight.
Continuous Mixers, Kneaders, and Compounders
Continuous mixers, twin-screw compounders, and sigma blade kneaders are specialized mixing machines used in rubber compounding, plastics processing, adhesives manufacturing, and specialty chemical production. These machines tend to be heavy relative to their footprint — a large rubber compounding mixer from Farrel, HF Mixing Group, or KraussMaffei Berstorff may weigh 30,000 to 150,000 pounds for the main drive and mixing chamber assembly alone. The overall skid or base frame configuration often pushes the transport dimensions into overwidth or overheight territory.
Continuous mixers and compounders are precision machines with close manufacturing tolerances and are sensitive to the shock and vibration of road transport if not properly secured. R&RM LLC uses appropriate blocking, cribbing, and tie-down configurations to restrain this equipment within the securement requirements of FMCSA Part 393, while protecting machined surfaces and sensitive components from transit damage. We work with your machinery moving contractor for loading and unloading where specialized rigging is required at origin or destination.
Transport Equipment for Industrial Mixers
Flatbed and Step Deck Trailers
Smaller ribbon blenders, portable paddle mixers, in-line mixing units, and agitator drive assemblies typically ship on standard 48-foot or 53-foot flatbed trailers or step deck trailers. Step decks — which have a lower rear deck section — are useful when a mixing vessel or drive assembly is too tall for a flatbed deck height but does not require the full depth of a lowboy. R&RM LLC selects between flatbed and step deck configurations based on the loaded height of the unit, including any drive motors or protruding nozzles.
Multi-Axle Lowboy and RGN Trailers
Large mixing vessels, heavy skid-mounted mixing systems, and top-entry agitator assemblies on tall vessels typically require multi-axle lowboy or removable gooseneck (RGN) trailer configurations. The low deck height of a lowboy — typically 18 to 24 inches off the road surface — reduces the overall transport height of a tall vessel-and-agitator assembly and brings the route under more bridge and utility clearance thresholds. RGN trailers are useful when the mixing vessel needs to be driven or rolled onto the trailer from the front, as is common with wheeled or skid-based equipment that cannot be crane-loaded from above. Our RGN hauling service is well-suited to skid-mounted mixing systems that can be positioned by forklift or skidder at origin.
