Loader Transport Methods

• RGN Hauling: The preferred method for most wheel loaders. The detachable gooseneck ramp allows the loader to drive directly onto the trailer under its own power, eliminating the need for cranes or forklifts. RGN transport is the safest and most cost-effective option for machines with full tires and operational drives.
• Step-Deck Flatbed: Used for smaller compact loaders and CTLs that fit within legal height limits. This is the most economical option for machines under about 48,000 lbs and 10 feet tall.
• Oversize Transport: Required for large loaders (Cat 980+, Komatsu WA500+, Volvo L180+) that exceed standard legal width, height, or weight limits. We handle all permit applications, route surveys, and pilot car coordination through our permit services.
• Multi-Axle Heavy Haul: For mining-class loaders in the 150,000 to 400,000 lb range, we arrange specialized multi-axle transport with appropriate weight distribution across 13 to 20+ axles.

Wheel Loader Dimensions & Permit Requirements

Understanding when a loader move requires permits is essential for cost and scheduling. Standard legal limits in most states are 8 feet 6 inches wide, 13 feet 6 inches tall, 53 feet long, and 80,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. Most medium and large wheel loaders exceed at least one of these thresholds:

• Width: Most loaders from the Cat 966 class up are 10 to 13 feet wide with bucket attached — always requiring an oversize width permit. Removing the bucket reduces width in many cases.
• Height: Loaders with ROPS structures and raised arms can reach 14 to 17 feet in transport position, triggering height permits on routes with low bridges or utility lines.
• Weight: Loaders from the Cat 980 class and above (86,000+ lbs machine weight) require axle-weight management to distribute load across enough axles and avoid overweight permit triggers.
• Length: Most standard loaders on RGN trailers fall within legal length limits, but mining-class loaders may require overlong permits on certain state routes.
