- Mud system: The drilling fluid tanks, shakers, and centrifuges that condition and recirculate drilling mud. These are typically skid-mounted units weighing 20,000 to 80,000 pounds per skid, transported on flatbeds with overweight permits as needed.
- Power modules: Diesel generator sets that provide electrical power to the rig — typically 1,000 to 3,000 kW units, skid-mounted and transported on flatbeds or RGNs.
- Iron roughneck and pipe handling systems: Mechanized pipe handling equipment that can reach 30,000 to 60,000 pounds per assembly and requires careful transport planning to protect hydraulic actuators and alignment systems.
The coordination challenge in a rig move is not just the individual loads — it is the sequencing. Components must arrive at the new well location in the order they are needed for rig-up. The substructure must arrive and be set before the derrick can be erected; the drawworks must arrive before the drill line can be strung. Midstream oil and gas operations — gathering, processing, and transportation of hydrocarbons between the wellhead and the refinery or end user — generate a different category of heavy haul moves. Rather than the frequent short-distance moves of drilling operations, midstream moves tend to be longer-distance, lower-frequency relocations of large fixed-plant equipment: compressors, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and processing modules.

Pressure Vessels and Separators
Pressure vessels — the tanks that separate gas, oil, and water at the wellhead and throughout the gathering system — are manufactured at fabrication shops and must be transported to the field site by truck. A large three-phase separator can be 10 to 12 feet in diameter and 40 to 60 feet long, requiring both overwidth and overlength permits. Horizontal vessels in the 8-foot diameter range can sometimes be transported on a standard flatbed with only minor overwidth permits; vessels in the 12-to-16-foot range require RGN transport, route surveys, and often police escorts.

Heat Exchangers and Process Equipment
Gas processing plants use heat exchangers — shell-and-tube, air-cooled fin-fan, and plate-and-frame configurations — to heat and cool process streams throughout the plant. Large shell-and-tube heat exchangers used in gas processing can reach 15 feet in diameter and 70 feet in length, making them among the most challenging oversize loads in the oil and gas category. Modular gas processing plants — skid-mounted or modular-fabricated processing units that are assembled at a fabrication yard and transported to the field as complete modules — are a growing segment of midstream infrastructure. A single cryogenic NGL extraction train may consist of eight to fifteen individual modules, each weighing 80,000 to 200,000 pounds and measuring 16 to 20 feet wide by 40 to 60 feet long. Refinery Turnaround Moves
Refineries undergo scheduled maintenance shutdowns — called turnarounds or turnarounds/outages — every two to five years. During a turnaround, process equipment is removed for inspection, repair, or replacement: heat exchangers pulled from their shells, reactor internals extracted for catalyst replacement, distillation column trays removed for cleaning. Superload Permits for Large Equipment
Large compressor packages, major process vessels, and refinery equipment frequently qualify as superloads. Special Hauling Vehicles (SHV) and Hydraulic Platform Trailers
The heaviest oil and gas loads — large compressor packages, refinery vessels, and LNG equipment — require hydraulic modular platform trailers (also called Scheuerle or Goldhofer trailers, or SPMTs) rather than conventional lowboy configurations. These trailers use hydraulic suspension systems that allow the trailer deck height to be adjusted precisely, can be configured in virtually any axle count or width combination, and can carry loads of 1,000,000 pounds or more when configured with sufficient axle count. States regulate hydraulic platform trailer operations differently from conventional lowboy operations, and some states require separate SHV permits or SHV operator certifications in addition to oversize and overweight permits.
