What Is a Self-Propelled Modular Transporter?
A self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) is a hydraulically steered, self-powered flatbed platform trailer designed to carry extremely heavy, wide, or dimensionally irregular industrial loads that exceed the capacity of conventional multi-axle lowboys and extendable flatbeds. Unlike conventional trailers that are pulled by a tractor, an SPMT is powered by its own diesel-hydraulic power pack unit (PPU), allowing the platform to move, steer, and maneuver independently — making precise positioning possible even in the tight confines of a refinery yard, shipyard, or bridge abutment.
SPMTs are modular by design: individual axle lines — each typically 4 feet wide and carrying 36 to 55 short tons per line — can be assembled in any combination of rows and lines to match the footprint and weight of the load. A single 6-axle-line, 4-file configuration might carry a 400-ton petrochemical module; a 24-axle-line arrangement in a 6-file-wide configuration could support a 2,000-ton reactor vessel. The modular system means SPMT transport configurations are engineered specifically for each load and each route.

How SPMTs Differ from Conventional Lowboys
Conventional multi-axle lowboys — including the hydraulic removable gooseneck (RGN) and step-deck configurations that carry most heavy construction equipment — have practical weight limits in the 250,000 to 400,000 pound range for the heaviest configurations available to most carriers. Beyond that threshold, load distribution across the trailer deck becomes a structural engineering problem, and conventional trailers run out of axle count before they run out of capacity.
SPMTs resolve this by providing effectively unlimited axle count — any weight can be accommodated by adding axle lines until the load is distributed to an acceptable per-axle value. SPMT configurations with 100 or more axle lines carrying millions of pounds are not uncommon in refinery module transport and offshore platform skidding operations. The tradeoff is complexity: SPMT moves require engineering analysis of the load distribution, route analysis for every bridge and overpass on the planned route, Special Hauling Vehicle permits from each state DOT, and significantly more advance lead time than a standard oversize move.
For loads between 200,000 and 400,000 pounds that would fall at the high end of a conventional lowboy's capacity, the choice between a heavily configured conventional trailer and an SPMT depends on the load's dimensions, its center of gravity, the route constraints, and the delivery site's access conditions. Major SPMT Manufacturers and Equipment Types
Scheuerle SPMT
Scheuerle (a Transporter Industry International company, along with Kamag and Nicolas) is one of the primary SPMT manufacturers worldwide. Scheuerle InterCombi and SPMT axle lines are among the most commonly used in heavy industrial transport in North America. Each axle line in the Scheuerle system has a nominal carrying capacity of 36 short tons per line, with higher-capacity axle line variants available for extreme-weight loads. The Scheuerle power pack unit (PPU) provides independent propulsion and manages hydraulic leveling across all axle lines, keeping the load deck level even over uneven terrain.
Goldhofer THP/SL and PST/SL
Goldhofer SPMT and heavy-duty platform trailer systems are widely used in North American petrochemical module transport. The Goldhofer THP/SL (transporter heavy platform, single-lane) and PST/SL (platform semi-trailer, single-lane) axle lines offer per-line capacities of 36 to 55 short tons depending on configuration. Goldhofer systems are commonly specified for LNG facility module transport, refinery turnaround moves, and large pressure vessel deliveries where the combination of high capacity and precise hydraulic leveling is required.
Cometto MSPE and KAMAG SPMT
Cometto (Módulos Especiales) and KAMAG (also part of TII Group) offer compatible SPMT axle line formats that interoperate with Scheuerle and other TII Group components. KAMAG SPMT equipment is common in German-manufactured systems that have been deployed in North American heavy lift operations. The interoperability of TII Group product families allows large SPMT operators to assemble very large configurations from multiple equipment pools when a single source cannot supply the axle count needed for an extreme-weight load.
Conventional Multi-Axle Hydraulic Platform Trailers
Not every ultra-heavy load requires a self-propelled SPMT. Conventional hydraulic platform trailers — pulled by one or more prime movers — offer hydraulic suspension and high axle counts without the self-propulsion system. These are appropriate for long over-the-road hauls where the site access at both ends can accommodate a conventional tractor arrangement, and where the load weight falls within the practical range of a conventional platform configuration (typically up to 500,000 to 600,000 pounds for the largest arrangements). Common conventional platform trailer systems include the Goldhofer THP/FL (full trailer), Nicolas MDMS, and Scheuerle flatbed platform systems.
Industrial Loads Transported on SPMT Configurations
Petrochemical and Refinery Modules
Petrochemical plant construction and refinery expansion projects frequently use modular construction techniques — building large, complex process sections in a controlled shop environment, then transporting complete modules to the site for final installation. A large process module might measure 80 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 40 feet tall, and weigh 800 to 1,500 tons. Transporting modules of this size requires SPMT configurations of 20 to 40 axle lines arranged in multiple files, coordinated with route analysis of every bridge, overpass, and vertical clearance on the route from the fabrication yard to the plant site.
SPMT module moves at Gulf Coast refineries and chemical plants are among the most common applications for this equipment type in North America. The Port Arthur, Beaumont, and Baton Rouge refinery corridors have well-established SPMT transport routes, with highway and local road configurations that state DOT offices are familiar with for Special Hauling Vehicle permitting.
Large Pressure Vessels and Reactor Heads
Large pressure vessels — column towers, reactor vessels, separator drums — for refinery and petrochemical plants are some of the heaviest individual loads moved on public highways in the United States. A large hydrogen reactor vessel (reactor head or full vessel) can weigh 1,000 to 3,000 tons and measure 15 to 30 feet in diameter and 60 to 120 feet in length. These moves require SPMT configurations engineered specifically for the vessel's weight distribution, hydraulic tie-down systems to prevent rolling or tipping, and detailed route surveys at every structure on the planned route.
Reactor vessel moves to and from refineries during planned shutdowns are time-critical: the shutdown schedule is fixed, and the vessel must arrive at the repair shop and return to the site within the maintenance window. Power Transformers — Ultra-Heavy
Large power transformers for high-voltage transmission substations — 500 kV and 765 kV units — can weigh 400,000 to 900,000 pounds including core, coil, and tank. While many large transformers in the 200,000 to 400,000 pound range transport on heavy conventional lowboys, the largest units require SPMT configurations to distribute weight across enough axle lines to meet state permit axle load allowances. Bridge Superstructure Steel and Precast Segments
Large steel bridge girders and precast concrete bridge segments for major bridge replacement projects occasionally require SPMT transport for the heaviest units. Steel tied-arch sections, large plate girder segments, and segmental precast box girder sections for long-span bridges can weigh 200,000 to 600,000 pounds per piece. SPMT platforms allow precise positioning of these units at the bridge abutment or pier, which is often essential when the delivery site geometry does not allow a conventional tractor to maneuver into the correct drop position.
Nuclear Power Plant Components
Nuclear plant construction, refueling, and major maintenance outages involve some of the heaviest and most regulated equipment transport in the United States. Reactor pressure vessels, steam generators, turbine-generator stators, and replacement transformers for nuclear plants frequently require SPMT transport. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and individual state utility commissions may impose additional escort and safety requirements on nuclear component moves beyond standard DOT oversize regulations. Route selection for nuclear component moves must avoid certain bridges, tunnels, and urban areas with specific NRC guidance, adding complexity to the permit process.
Offshore Platform and Shipyard Modules
Fabricated offshore platform topsides, jacket sections, and FPSO (floating production storage and offloading) modules must be transported from fabrication yards to quayside load-out areas. These moves are typically within industrial facility boundaries or along dedicated heavy haul corridors between the fab yard and the dock — often on private road systems that avoid public highway permit requirements. However, when public roads must be crossed or traveled, Special Hauling Vehicle permits are required. SPMT equipment is standard for these moves due to the extreme weights and the need for precise positioning during quayside load-out operations.
Special Hauling Vehicle (SHV) Permits for SPMT Moves
SPMT configurations on public highways require Special Hauling Vehicle (SHV) permits in addition to standard oversize and overweight permits in most states. SHV permits are issued separately from standard oversize permits and require additional engineering documentation:
- Route analysis: Every bridge, overpass, and underpass on the planned route must be analyzed by a licensed structural engineer to verify that the structure can support the SPMT load at the proposed speed and configuration.
- Load distribution plan: The SPMT axle layout must be documented, showing the load per axle line and the distribution across the deck, to confirm compliance with the state's bridge formula and permit axle allowances.
- Escort requirements: Most states require police escorts for SPMT moves on public highways, in addition to private pilot cars. Some states require law enforcement at every intersection. Escort requirements must be confirmed with each state DOT permit office during the application process.
- Travel window restrictions: SPMT moves are typically restricted to weekday daytime travel windows. Night movement, weekend movement, and movement during state-designated holiday blackout periods is rarely permitted for SPMT configurations. Lead time for SHV permits ranges from 3 to 8 weeks per state, depending on the complexity of the route analysis and the state DOT's review workload. For multi-state SPMT moves, permit applications must be coordinated across all states simultaneously, and all permit windows must align for the planned move date. Planning an SPMT move requires starting the permitting process well before the target move date — often 6 to 10 weeks in advance for complex multi-state routes.
Site Access and Preparation for SPMT Moves
The site access conditions at both the origin and destination of an SPMT move are critical planning elements. SPMT configurations are wide — a 4-file SPMT arrangement is typically 14 to 20 feet wide across the platform — and heavy. Site access considerations include:
- The load-bearing capacity of the origin and destination yard surfaces, including any private haul roads and yard paving that the SPMT must cross
- Turning radius requirements at all turns on the route from the public highway to the final installation position — SPMT hydraulic steering allows very tight turns, but the overall length of the configuration limits turning radius
- Overhead clearance at site gates, structures, and utility lines on the approach route
- Whether the SPMT can drive directly to the installation position, or whether an intermediate crane set or skidding operation is needed to move the load the last few feet into final position
- Ground bearing pressure at the final installation position — SPMTs distribute weight across many axle lines, but a fully loaded SPMT configuration on soft ground can still exceed safe bearing limits, requiring temporary ground matting or steel plate
When to Use SPMT vs. Conventional Lowboy Transport
SPMT transport is the right choice when one or more of the following conditions apply:
- The load weight exceeds 300,000 to 400,000 pounds — the practical upper limit for even the heaviest conventional lowboy configurations
- The load dimensions are too large to transport on a conventional trailer without structural interference — for example, a vessel or module that would overhang the trailer in a way that creates a stability or structural concern
- The delivery site requires SPMT-level precision positioning — maneuvering a load within inches of its final installation position in a confined yard or on a bridge deck
- The load has a very low center of gravity and extremely high deck loading that conventional trailer decks cannot support structurally
For loads that fall in the 150,000 to 300,000 pound range and have manageable dimensions, a conventional multi-axle lowboy or heavy hydraulic platform trailer is typically faster, less expensive, and easier to permit than an SPMT configuration.
